Boxing Cacaces Ibf Title Not On The Line For Saturdays Wembley Showdown Against Warrington

Boxing: Cacace's IBF title not on the line for Saturday's Wembley showdown against Warrington

Belfast boxer forced to put his IBF strap on the line after missing weight

Belfast boxer Michael Cacace will not be putting his IBF world title on the line when he faces Leeds' Josh Warrington in a huge featherweight clash at Wembley Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports. The IBF ordered the fight to be for Cacace's title but he failed to make weight on Friday, coming in 2lbs 3oz over the 126lbs limit, meaning only Warrington can win the belt. Cacace weighed in at 128lbs 3oz, with Warrington bang on the limit.

Cacace apologises for missing weight

Cacace, 31, apologised for missing weight, saying: "I want to apologise to Josh Warrington, his team, my team and everyone who bought tickets. I am truly sorry, I gave it everything but my body just wouldn't let me get down to the weight.

"I am devastated, my dream was to become a two-weight world champion and defend my IBF title at the same time but it wasn't to be. I know I let people down but I promise I will come back stronger."

Warrington (31-1-1, 8 KOs), entered the ring to jeers from the home crowd but kept his counsel, shaking hands with Cacace and posing for photos with his rival.

The fight is still expected to be a cracker, with both men known for their exciting, come-forward styles. Warrington is the slight favourite, but Cacace will be hoping to spring a surprise and add Warrington's IBF title to his own.

The atmosphere is sure to be electric at Wembley Arena on Saturday night, with a sell-out crowd expected. It promises to be a special night for British boxing.
