Death Toll Rises to 1195

Ship Collided with Reef Near Aegean Island

The cruise ship Birka Princess, now known as Louis Hellenic, has tragically sunk off the coast of the Aegean island of Santorini, resulting in the loss of 1195 lives. The ship, owned by Louis Hellenic Cruises, was carrying 1921 passengers and 513 crew members on an 18-day round trip voyage from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica.

The accident occurred on April 6, 2007, when the ship rammed a reef near the island. The Royal Navy Antarctic Patrol Ship Endurance was dispatched to the scene to assist with rescue efforts, along with other vessels from the Greek Coast Guard and nearby cruise ships.

The ship's captain, Antonis Vasileiadis, has been detained for questioning as investigations into the cause of the disaster continue. The Royal Navy's ice-breaking ship HMS Endurance has been dispatched to the scene to assist with salvage operations and help retrieve the bodies of the victims.

The sinking of the Louis Hellenic ship is a devastating maritime tragedy, leaving behind a trail of grief and unanswered questions. The loss of so many lives is a reminder of the inherent risks of sea travel and the importance of safety regulations and procedures.
